During his international practical phase, Nicolas Winter explored the Fresenius Kabi site in Lake Zurich, USA. As a dual student studying business informatics and e-health, this assignment was a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of global information and digital technology. Join Nicolas for a day at work in the Global Business Applications team at Fresenius Kabi USA.

A dual study program combines academic studies at a university with practical experience at a company. Students alternate between attending lectures and working in a professional environment, gaining both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills. This model is especially popular in Germany and is ideal for those who want to earn a degree while starting their career.

What tasks and projects did you manage during this time?

In the project I was allowed to lead, I was responsible for creating and maintaining the project plan as well as for task and time planning. I also led weekly update calls and coordinated the exchange of information within the team. For the Java license remediation project, I communicated with end users and server administrators and provided instructions on how to remove non-compliant Java versions. I also created communication materials, such as presentations for management.

What was living in the US like?

From my accommodation, it took me 20 minutes to get to the office and 40–50 minutes to get to downtown Chicago. I quickly realized how long the distances were and how dependent people were on cars. In my free time, I was able to go on lots of trips to the countryside with its numerous parks and lakes, and I could also get to Lake Michigan quickly. I really liked the mix of nature and city life.

What did you particularly enjoy?

Americans are open to conversation and it's easy to get in touch with them. In addition to my job, I was able to participate in activities with the other summer interns, such as baseball and organized get-togethers – ideal for getting to know people and better understanding life and studying in the US.

What experiences from this time remain particularly memorable for you?

I had the opportunity to fly to Sacramento, California, for a two-day workshop. During the flight, it was wonderful to see America from above, and it was also exciting to see parts of the American West Coast. In addition, the American Independence Day took place during my time there, on July 4 to be precise, and I was able to witness the excitement with which this holiday is celebrated. There were numerous celebrations during this period, and fireworks were held every evening throughout the weekend.
