Ann-Kathrin joined Helios in 2022. She successfully completed the management trainee programme and now works as a junior hospital manager at Helios Klinikum Gifhorn. In this interview, she explains what makes the programme special for her, what she appreciates about her day-to-day work and why new experiences are always worthwhile.

Why did you decide to join the trainee programme and subsequent management programme at Helios?

I immediately perceived Helios as very innovative and modern. I simply had the feeling that I was in the right place and felt very comfortable from the very beginning.

What does your everyday work in the management programme look like?

No two days are the same – so my working day is very varied. I have various tasks, topics and projects that I work on and am jointly responsible for. These range from queries and complaints to departmental restructuring and inspections. But overall, I support the managing director on site and am available to colleagues as a point of contact.

What have been the highlights of the programme for you so far?

The clinical congress and the joint workshops and seminars are always a highlight for me. But I also think our network itself is really special – not just among us junior managers and trainees, but throughout the entire Helios Group. The exchange of ideas is really valuable.

What kind of manager do you want to be?

It is important to me to be authentic. I want to be a manager who supports, encourages and works on an equal footing with the team. My goal is for my colleagues to be able to rely on me. And I want us to see ourselves as a joint team that works together to advance our hospital.

What advice would you give to future trainees?

Take in everything you can! Every experience is helpful, whether positive or negative. Changing locations is particularly instructive and helps you develop professionally – the more locations you change, the better. Even if it can be exhausting at times, looking back, it is really invaluable. You learn a lot from it and can always fall back on these experiences later on.
