Deepika Kalyanapu,Workday Platform Owner
Deepika, what does it say on your business card and what does your job entail?

I am a Workday Platform Owner at Fresenius Digital Technology. My responsibilities include release management and technical optimization. I handle the Workday releases – which are essentially upgrades, released approximately twice a year – and manage them. Additionally, I work on the technical aspects of the platform, focusing on system integrations and ensuring a smooth flow of data between different systems. I am also involved in testing new integrations, such as the My Fresenius ID project, where we ensure an accurate transfer of employee information between systems.

Can you give us some examples?

I joined Fresenius around the time when we went live with the new system, so in the beginning I worked a lot on tickets regarding access issues – i.e., end users having problems logging onto Workday. This is completely normal when a new software environment is introduced. As the incoming data is so heterogeneous – it originates from lots of different entities across the world – we now mainly handle tickets on data discrepancies. It is a kind of clean-up process so to speak. Furthermore, I work on test cases with my colleagues to test out new functions. And then, of course, I have meetings with other team members. These are usually towards the end of my working day, as I am based in India, whereas most other people are based in Europe and the U.S. It means we have to utilize those few hours in which we have an overlap due to the different time zones.

What excites you about the role?

For me, the most exciting part of my job is using the capabilities of Workday to enhance HR processes and improve the efficiency of reporting. I am passionate about implementing user-friendly solutions that make a real difference to our colleagues. I find it particularly satisfying to work on projects that streamline processes and make data more accessible and useful across the organization. Additionally, being part of a global company like Fresenius allows me to work on complex, large-scale implementations that have a significant impact on how the company operates. The constant evolution of technology is really interesting, especially with the integration of AI in platforms like Workday. There is always something new to learn when you work in IT.

How would you describe your team? What sets it apart?

The first thing that comes to mind is our strong spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing. We always communicate to ensure that everyone is up to date on each other’s work. This transparency allows us to seamlessly cover for one another when needed – we are a very supportive team. We have daily meetings and one-on-ones to discuss ongoing tasks and projects, which keep everyone aligned and informed. We have a really good working atmosphere despite the fact that people work in different time zones.

„It is a great industry to work in and Fresenius is strong in technology adoption.”

What is your background? How did you end up at Fresenius?

I have a master’s degree in Computer Applications, which I graduated from in 2009. I would like to add that I come from an orthodox Indian family that believes that women should stay at home after their studies. At the same time, my parents always valued a good education and never stopped me from achieving what I set out to achieve. I began my career in IT by joining an Indian IT consulting firm as a young graduate. In my next employment, I started working with Workday for the first time, which then became my specialization over the following years. Several jobs followed in various industries, during which time I was promoted to team lead and therefore gained experience in both technical and functional roles. I also spent a couple of years working in the UK. Kiran and I had met at a previous employer and, when in 2024 I wanted to move on, I contacted her. She referred me to Fresenius, and after a series of interviews, I joined the company in October 2024. I am grateful for the opportunity that led me to Fresenius.

What would you say to a friend who was thinking about joining Fresenius?

I would tell them that Fresenius has an excellent work culture and a strong industry presence and stability, which provides a sense of security. This of course also means good salaries and global job opportunities. It is a great industry to work in and Fresenius is strong in technological adoption, particularly with platforms like Workday. All of this makes it an exciting place for IT professionals. There are ample opportunities for career growth and continuous learning here. The collaborative environment is particularly noteworthy. For me personally, I would even say that after just a short time of working here, I can envision a long-term career at Fresenius. I would even say I’d like to stay until retirement!

What are you proud of?

I am proud of my journey in the IT industry, especially as a woman in tech – I am proud that I have managed to build a successful path in a challenging field. I am proud of the technical expertise I have developed over the years and my ability to contribute to complex projects like the Workday implementation at Fresenius. I also really value being part of a team that appreciates collaboration and problem-solving. The fact that I have found a place at Fresenius where I feel valued and see a long-term future makes me incredibly proud and grateful.
